No title Hong Kong Major Service Industries overview By arranging cargo transport, the freight forwarding industry has contributed fundamentally to Hong Kong's success as the 11th largest merchandise trading entity and one of the most trade-oriented economies in the world. Most of the larger freight forwarders have a wide network of overseas branches, and act as agents for international air and ocean liners. The industry is responding to customers' needs by also providing more value-added services such as warehousing, packing, sorting, distribution and total logistics solutions. The industry has benefited from Hong Kong's leading freight infrastructure: 1. The combined air cargo handled by Hong Kong's two air cargo terminals amounted to 3.6 million tonnes in 2006. Added handling capacity arrived on 8 March 2007 following the opening of Asia Airfreight’s new air cargo terminal (T2), with its combined handling capacity (T1+T2) expanded to 1.5 million tonnes. 2. The Airport Freight Forwarding Centre provides on-airport premium warehousing services and houses over 50 freight forwarding/logistics companies and ancillary service providers. 3. The Hong Kong Shenzhen Western Corridor across Deep Bay was officially opened on 1 July 2007, thereby doubling the capacity of Hong Kong's boundary crossing facilities. Also, the government is planning to build the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link to further enhance the inland connectivity and to provide additional access to HKIA and linking to the Hong Kong Shenzhen Western Corridor. - 2006 Number of Air Cargo Forwarders 937 Employment 14,191 Number of Sea Cargo Forwarders 2,216 Employment 22,531
