Game Boom in India
Game Boom Author: Mithosh Joseph | Amusing the young and old alike, the computer gaming market in India is enjoying a bullish trend | Decades ago, it was beyond our imagination that a single mouse and monitor could comply with the gaming quest of people who were then enjoying the same from the play grounds. Sigh of an old hat looking at the gaming zest of new generation would also be a droll as they themselves are preparing to try it once. Computer gaming history consists only few pages as it had a very recent origin. But, it predicts a dazzling future which is now detectable from the present market scenario. Humble beginning The history of computer gaming is briefly a history of technology. The first computer game is generally assumed to be the ‘Spacewar’, a game developed in 1962 at MIT by Stephen Russell. The new invention was initially tested on a PDP-1 computer. The graphics were rather primitive when comparing to the packages that came out in 1980’s. The players of ‘Spacewar’ were supposed to avoid a black hole while trying to shoot the opponents. Peter Samson, Dan Edwards, Martin Graetz, Alan Kotok, Steve Piner and Robert Saunders were also part of the MIT team to give birth to the first game child. The general thing about the evolution of computer game is that it has become more dependent on genres. Most the early computer games introduced new game play elements borrowing traits from ancestors. It has become more inter-textual and interactive these days complying with the desires of the user.Computer game is in sharp competition with video, console and arcade games. Video and console games are games connected to a TV, whereas arcade games means games placed in public spaces and individual cabinets. Computer games are occasionally taken to mean games played on a PC. Many developments in the history of the computer game are not technological but purely conceptual. Approximately the period between1977 to 1993 is dominated by games for single players. The multi player game became widely popular with the appearance of Doom, an ID Software of 1993 which allows connecting several PCs. It has been criticised for being violent, but it is one of the most popular computer games ever appeared.Gaming boom in IndiaThe Indian gaming industry is expected to triple with an estimate of $300 million by 2009. Presently it is at $100 million in the country. It signifies a growth of 94 per cent compound annual growth rate. Interestingly, this segment was estimated at only $30 million in 2005 and $8 million in 2003, showing a CAGR of 78%.Of this, mobile gaming contributes 58 per cent and can go up to 70 per cent with increase in use of mobile phones. Gaming includes consoles, online, multiplayer, casual and mobile games, according to another report by a global consultancy firm. The Indian gaming industry is also preparing to benefit from outsourcing and firms in India are now making modules of games for international companies reducing costs. Microsoft is one among such firms that released a game developed by Dhruva Interactive based in Bangalore.According to industry sources, the ratio of revenue from services and original content development has already reached to 80:20 and is expected to improve to 60:40 in a couple of years.
Indian animation companies like DQ Entertainment Ltd, Animation Bridge, Paradox Studios, ColorChips, Toonz Animation, Hungama and Ittina Studios have entered the field which was until now monopolized by companies such as Dhruva Interactive; Indiagames Ltd, Mauj Telecom, and Mobile2Win.
These companies are also creating their own games. The success of India’s first content animated feature film ‘Hanuman’ produced by Percept Pictures and Sahara India Group has motivated game developers to look at Indian content to base their games on. Several companies like Indiagames, Paradox Studios, Fantasy Labs and Ittina Solutions have already started local content for mobiles, PCs and consoles. DQ Entertainment has planned to produce three animated feature films and also develop games around them.Interestingly, Indian game developers are also tapping the popularity of Bollywood movies and a game based on the super hit Hindi movie ‘Don’ was introduced recently.
Meanwhile, a recent study by IMRB International showed that online gaming market in India has been estimated at Rs.210 million While 58.4% of this revenue comes from organised cyber cafes.Strategic production The leading players of the Indian computer gaming industry have launched specific strategy for their home land. Microsoft has already announced the date of availability for ‘Xbox Live’ in India while Sony launched an Indian version of its popular PlayStation 2 titled 'Singstar'.The two gaming giants are now preparing to tap the yet uncharted Indian gaming market. To start with, both have added a Bollywood flavour to the games.Microsoft has announced that Xbox Live would be available from November 5. 'Singstar Bollywood' has already been launched in Mumbai. When Sony focuses on a more localised market, Microsoft has emphasis on putting the Indian gamer on the world scene. Improved CPU technology saw a huge increase in gaming realism and today's computer gaming market relies heavily on this innovation to stay in tandem with consumer demand. Today, scores of upgrading in computer gaming are in the form of advanced physics engines that permit a more sensible interaction with the gaming world as shown by the Indian producers.
